After watching Sherry Turkle's TedTalk, there was one major thing that was mentioned that really stuck out to me:
"Those little devices in our pockets are so psychologically powerful that they don't only change what we do, but they change how we are." This is so unbelievably true and as I sat back and was absorbed by her talk I continuously found my head nodding along agreeing to what she had to say. Yes, technology is amazing and offers so many new opportunities for creative expression and collaboration; however, there is still a need for our society to put the technology away and communicate face-to-face. As Turkle implied, the difficult part for us all will be finding the happy median between interacting online and interacting directly. This coincides with our everlasting challenge of continuously learning as we find the best fit of connection for us all. Digital storytelling can be applied in the classroom in a multitude of ways. Students are constantly writing and creating in the classroom, and with the growing importance and presence of technology in the classrooms, digital storytelling will only become more popular. Personally, I enjoy digital storytelling for the assortment of media tools and techniques that can be applied in order to create a story. I believe it is important for students to be introduced to digital storytelling at a young age as students can easily relate to their creations and acquire many skills along the way. Transferring knowledge orally and in written form has been a part of human lives for hundreds of years, therefore continuing this transfer in the most up-to-date form with media only makes sense. Allowing students to have the option of interweaving digital storytelling into everyday learning can also easily open up many cross-curricular doors.

Prior to taking the Digital Learning Horoscope I had a pretty rough idea of what results I would end up with and sure enough my top results concluded that I am a motivator! In other words, I make it my goal to encourage students and their creativity to make them strong independent learners. The demystifier and spirit guide characteristics are of no surprise either as I believe a student's overall well-being is crucial for success. In regards to being a demystifier, I think this is an important trait to have when dealing with the media world as I want students to strive for knowledge and use their thinking skills to find out everything that they should know in terms of the online and social media world. |

The concept of the 21st Century learner and the advantages of this concept is clearly outlined in this video and only further inflicts the need for this style of learning for today's generations. Todays students are not like any other learners of the past therefore require and deserve to have education catered to their learning styles and interests; which happens to be various types of technology and media as they live in a world that is only further growing its dependence on digital resources.
I am excited to see what unfolds in 21st century education as media only furthers to impact our society. The amount of creativity that can be expressed online is why I truly am passionate and support the idea of the 21st learner in schools. This is because it not only does it allow students to show expression and drive their interests, but the background knowledge that they already have in programs, sites, apps and so forth can allow them to produce some pretty incredible work that is realistically above the average expectation of an elementary aged student. The video above also mentioned the idea that the rate of growth for technology will only further be increasing therefore there will always be something new to retain, explore, discover and investigate.
